Norfolk Island Marathon August 2, 2026 7:00 AM, No time limit

RegistrationNorfolk Island Marathon

MG Annual meeting date was on August 1, 2026 in the meeting room at Aloha Apartments (51a Taylors Road, Norfolk Island NSW 2899)

Norfolk Island was discovered by Europeans and named after the the Duchess of Norfolk by Captain James Cook. The first settlement was established in 1788. The early history of Norfolk Island was that of a penal settlement, as there were two convict settlements on the island from 1788-1814 and from 1825-1855. The latter was reputed to be one of the harshest penal settlements in the British empire.
Following the closure of the second penal colony, the island was chosen in 1856 to relocate the people of Pitcairn Island, a community of descendants of mutineers from the HMS Bounty and their Tahitian brides, who had overgrown the capacity of Pitcairn Island. This historical link to Pitcairn is the reason that Norfolk Island was selected to be coupled to the first Pitcairn Island Marathon. The penal colony buildings and the site where Captian Cook landed can be visited and are along the marathon course. Today, Norfolk Island is a self-governing Australian territory known for it’s unique culture and heritage. It has an ISO number, which is why it counts as a country for MG.

Marathon Event – Norfolk Island Marathon

Course: The race course was a two-lap course. The first lap was 25.0 km and made one large loop around the island, starting in Kingston near the UNESCO World Heritage site and traversing the National Park to Captain Cook’s lookout, then turning West and then south to return to Kingston. The section in the National Park is very hilly, perhaps more like hiking, but very scenic. The second loop was 17.2 km and stays in the southern part of the island in the Kingston and Burnt Pine communities. The marathon finished in Kingston where we started.

Norfolk Athletics assisted with race course preparations, provided finish line markers, and helped with staffing the aid stations. There were toilet facilities at the start and at the tourist areas in the National Park (Captain Cook lookout) and at Puppy’s Point. There were 4 aid stations along lap 1 with refreshments that were staffed with volunteers from Norfolk Athletics. Don Bierer manned the aid station at the start/finish. On lap two, we ran past the race hotel, and an additional aid station was also set up.

Norfolk Island Marathon Race Rules:

Please read over the rules posted on the website:  https://norfolkislandmarathon.com/race-information/

Most important rules are:

  1. It is mandatory that all runners wear a GPS watch (Garmin, Apple, COROS, etc.) during the race.  No GPS watch = no finish time (only local runners with prior notification are exempt).
  2. A signed waiver form is necessary to be able to compete in the Norfolk Island Marathon.  The wavier form is on the website. Please return it to info@tntmarathons.com
  3. A mobile phone with e-Sim service for Norfolk Island must be carried with you during the race ( this rule was waived as we had enough volunteers with e-Sim service to track runners).
  4. The race was on a Sunday.  No National Park personnel work on Sunday.  The course traverses National Park in two sections.  Therefore, it is requested that no one runs alone through the park.  Team up and run with someone through the two sections of the park (about 5 km in total, see map). This is for safety reasons. It is difficult for Ambulance service to reach the hilly sections of the course. If you must wait for someone to run with, please do so.
