Sandy started running in her mid-thirties, prompted by a mailer from a charity marathon training program. The group promised to train anyone to run a marathon, regardless of previous running experience. Sandy was game, and completed her first marathon - the 2005 Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. That was followed by the 2005 Dublin Marathon in Ireland, and two more marathons the following year.
After taking a few years off marathon running (but still completing 5Ks and smaller events), Sandy came back in full force in 2012. By 2013 she had earned Titanium status in the Marathon Maniacs by completing 30 marathons in 30 different US states in a 52 week period. Then in 2015 she became a finisher in the Fifty States Marathon Club, completing that journey at the Newport, Oregon marathon. Also in 2015, Sandy qualified as a provisional member for the Marathon Globetrotters at the annual reunion in the Bahamas.
Changing life priorities have slowed Sandy down on finishing marathons in new countries. As of 2022 she is holding at 14 countries plus 1 unofficial country (she crossed the finish line just minutes after they stopped timing runners at the 2019 Hong Kong Marathon, so this one does not appear in her stats). She still holds the goals of completing the World Marathon Majors and the Seven Continents someday.
Along her running journey, Sandy has paced numerous marathons and half marathons, served as a past Director of Publicity for the Marathon Globetrotters, and obtained her Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) coaching certification level 1. Giving back to the running community is something she has enjoyed.
